The Effects of the Sun on the Skin

Doctor Kelly Bomer and her Brother

Dr. Bomer is 45 in this picture, and her brother is 47.

She has spent the last 15 years limiting sun exposure and applying sunscreen daily as part of her complete skin care program. Her brother has spent a great deal of time in the sun and does not use sunscreen or skin care products on a regular basis.

This demonstrates the significant role that sun exposure plays as an extrinsic factor that damages and ages the skin separate from intrinsic genetic factors. Mr. Bomer shows pigment changes throughout his face, scalp, and neck from UV radiation. Molecules that retain water within the skin are also damaged from sun exposure leading to skin that becomes dry, flat and dull. He has had several skin cancers removed as well. The fine lines and wrinkles are related to loss of elastin and collagen from UV damage. By minimizing sun exposure and using skin care products daily Dr. Bomer has slowed the aging of her skin and face. Dr. Bomer’s pigment is more even throughout her face; she has minimal fine lines and has never had a skin cancer. Her skin is luminous and well hydrated. Regular injections of Botox and Dysport have delayed the formation of wrinkles in her forehead and between her eyebrows.
