Botox, Dysport and Xeomin: Wrinkle Relaxers

Botox, Dysport and Xeomin are popular, effective and safe injectables that reduce facial lines and creases for 3-4 months. They reduce the strength of targeted muscles in the face, softening their contraction. It is the contraction of specific facial muscles that causes the skin to wrinkle. Over time these dynamic wrinkles (such as in the forehead and the crow’s feet that form during muscle contraction) become permanent wrinkles in the skin even at rest.

Regular injections of Botox, Dysport and Xeomin not only prevent most dynamic skin wrinkles, but milder static wrinkles may be improved as well.

The injection team at Rejuvent is comprised of Drs. Bomer and Bouzoukis, and most recently, our nurse injector, Linda Esposito.  The technique utilized by the entire team has been carefully developed by Dr. Bomer over 10 years. The skill and artistry of the injectors ensure a natural rejuvenated look after injections.

The doctors’ knowledge of anatomy and training as a facial surgeons, enables them to precisely inject into the areas of the muscles that give maximum benefit in relaxing muscles and smoothing creases.  Targeted placement can also relax the different muscles that pull the eyebrows up or down.  Both brow positionand shape can be adjusted with precise injections to maximize aesthetically pleasing results. Botox, Dysport and Xeomin in the crow’s feet region not only softens the creases but keeps the eyes more open when smiling. Pre-injection photographs of the whole face are obtained at every visit to aid in analysis and customization of injections.

Dr. Bomer is an instructor for Galderma and teaches other physicians in the use of Dysport.

Frequently asked questions related to Botox, Dysport and Xeomin.

(All answers apply to all 3 products)

What is the ideal age to start using Botox?

Botox can make a big difference in your face in ways, and locations you never thought possible. It can be used to relax existing wrinkles, prevent wrinkles, hide your gums and even lift your eyebrows. There is not an ideal age to start using Botox and your doctor will advise you if it is going to make a difference in your case.

Does Botox Prevent wrinkles?

Yes, absolutely.

Botox, Dysport and Xeomin contain highly purified proteins that can temporarily slow or stop the muscle contraction that cause your wrinkles. The facial expressions that you constantly make such as laughing, smiling and frowning contribute to the formation and deepening of your wrinkles. These wrinkles form around your eyes, forehead, between your eyes and around your lips. As your face moves, those wrinkles get deeper and deeper.

When Botox is introduced into the skin it stops the muscle contraction. It not only diminishes and smooths the wrinkles you already have, it also keeps your facial muscles from contracting for several months, which prevents new wrinkles from forming.

Will the Botox injection hurt?

Our goal is for you to be very comfortable.

Rejuvent offers at no additional cost a topical numbing cream.  The topical numbing cream is specially compounded for Rejuvent by a specialty pharmacy. It is very effective at reducing the skin sensation and is recommended for anyone who wishes a less painful injection experience.

The application of the topical numbing cream does require a longer appointment time of an additional 15 minutes for optimal results.

How Long Does Botox Last?

It varies from patient to patient, but generally speaking, results usually last three and a half to four months.

There are actually several factor to consider. The most important one is who is administering Botox (or Dysport and Xeomin), as the correct amount in the right area will make a difference. Preparation of the products is also key. Botox comes in powder form and must be reconstituted before it is injected. It is sensitive to heat, excessive agitation, and time.

At Rejuvent the Neuromodulator (Botox, Dysport and Xeomin) is reconstituted sterilely with preservative-free saline which is the type of saline indicated in the FDA approval of the medication while many offices use preserved saline which can degrade the activity of theNeuromodulator.

At Rejuvent, the Neuromodulator is drawn up by the injecting physician directly before the injection which allows for customized injection doses and patterns that are tailored to each unique face.  In order to save time, many offices will have more standardization of doses and draw these into syringes before the patients arrive at the office and this method lends itself to having less ability to customize the dosing dependent on what each unique face presents.

Important: Beware of spas and offices that pre-mix their Botox injections as those tend to lose effectiveness. These offices often offer specials marketed as “Botox Days” on Fridays and Mondays and inject Botox that have been previously mixed.

How long will it take to see my Botox results?

While initial effects with the injection are visible as soon as 3-4 days, you should expect your final Botox results to be achieved 2-3 weeks after an injection.

Will I look frozen or my skin feel numb?

Botox does not affect the nerves that give your face sensation. It will only stop or slow the contraction of your facial muscles. It is very important to be treated by an experienced doctor who can judge the size of your muscles and how much Botox you will need so you do not end up with a frozen look.

At Rejuvent, only Dr. Bomer or Dr. Bouzoukis will perform your Botox, Dysport or Xeomin injection. They are experts in facial anatomy and Botox injections and will ensure that your concerns are properly addressed for a natural rejuvenated look.

Why does it make a difference who injects Botox?

Just consider this, Botox courses are offered to Non-Surgeon doctors, Nurses and Medical Assistants and typically, a certificate is issued in a few hours. These professionals are not familiar with facial anatomy. They can be taught a general area where Botox (Dysport and Xeomin) can be injected, but do they really know the muscles and nerves below the skin?

The most experienced injectors are facial surgeons who actually operate on the target muscles in patients having forehead, brow lifts, eyelid and facelift surgeries.

Dr. Bomer and Dr. Bouzoukis are both facial plastic surgeons and experts at facial anatomy. They know from the inside out, the mechanisms of muscles, nerves and how they behave. The outcome is directly related to the experience and expertise of the individual performing the Botox injection.

How can I minimize the chance of bruising or bleeding from Botox injection?

Avoid taking aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications – Ibuprofen or similar products (Advil, Motrin, Aleve), St. John’s Wort, Gingko Biloba, Vitamin E or fish oil supplements 1 week prior to your Botox, Dysport or Xeomin treatment. If you require a pain remedy during this time period, it is okay to take Tylenol.

Bruising, if at all, is often minimal and can easily be covered with concealer, but we do recommend that you schedule any social plans accordingly for 7-10 days following your injection.

Are there side effects to Botox Injections?

Botox, Dysport and Xeomin are very safe and approved by the FDA.  The most common side effects include swelling or bruising at the injection site, headache or flu-like symptoms. Other side effects are rare but could occur. If you have questions or reservations about Botox, Dysport or Xeomin the Patient Coordinator or Doctor can discuss your concerns with you.

Is there anything I should avoid post Botox injection?

We recommend that you do not have any type of facial massage or place your face in a face cradle for a massage for 10 days following your injection.
